Our Story

Coffee poured inside a century of batik.

Kooken sits in Kampung Batik Kauman, Surakarta — a neighbourhood of narrow lanes, heritage houses and families who have drawn batik for generations.

Kooken began with a simple question: how do you invite someone into a place like Kauman without turning it into a photo stop?

Our answer was coffee. A cup is an easy reason to sit down, and sitting down is how stories start. From that table, guests meet the canting, the wax, the pattern books and the people who keep them.

The name carries two worlds — the Dutch kitchen that gave Solo its poffertjes and stroopwafel, and the Javanese warmth that has always defined this kampung. Both are on the menu.

Today Kooken is a café, a batik workshop, a scooter start line and a meeting point for anyone curious about Solo's heritage. Come for the coffee, stay for the culture.

What we stand for

Three things we never compromise.

Heritage first

We work with batik artisans and neighbours of Kauman, keeping the craft in local hands.

Slow hospitality

No rushing. A good cup, a shaded courtyard and time to look around.

Living culture

Kauman is not a museum. Every experience is hosted by people who live here.
